What Products Should I Put In My Vending Machine? (You’re Asking the Wrong Question)

“What items should I put in my machine?”

Sounds like a smart question…

But it’s the wrong one.

Don’t make the mistake of asking random people what you should put in your machine.

I get it—when you’re first starting out, it’s uncomfortable. You want guidance. You want a list.

So you go looking for:

“Top 10 vending items”

“Best snacks to sell”

“Best selling drinks”

And then you load your machine with what everyone else is selling…

And wonder why your products just sit there.

Here’s the Reality

What sells in one location…

Might not sell at all in another.

I’ve had the same exact product:

Sell out in one spot

Sit untouched in another

Same item.

Different environment.

It’s Not About the Item…

It’s About the People

I’ve had products sell out fast…

So I restock them a couple times…

Then suddenly they slow down, and something else becomes the top seller.

That’s vending.

Rule of Thumb

Don’t just stock your machine with products you like.

And don’t assume what’s selling today will sell forever.

This business is trial and error.

“Just Ask the Location What They Want”… Not So Fast

People love to say: “Just ask them what they want.”

Sounds good… but in reality?

It doesn’t always work like that.

Almost 10 years in this business, and I’ve had people say: “Can you bring hot chips?”

I bring hot chips…

And the person who asked for it? They don’t even buy it every day.

One person asks for something → I add it

Next time I come back → someone else asks why it’s even in there 😆

That’s when you realize…

You’re not stocking for individuals.

You’re stocking for the majority.

How You Should Actually Approach It

When I stock:

If multiple people request something → I’ll try it

After that → I keep it simple

What sells → stays

What doesn’t → gets replaced

After a couple months, you’ll start to understand the location.

Best Advice for New Vendors

Let me save you some frustration:

Don’t stock your machine 100% when you first place it

I’m not saying leave slots empty… just don’t overfill them

Don’t expect to profit on your first few restocks

That money might need to go right back into buying new products

Don’t stress trying to get it perfect

You won’t

Final Thought

Try different items.

Pay attention.

Adjust.

That’s how you find your “sweet spot.”

But don’t ask random people what you should sell…

Because they’re not running your business.

You are.
